If the first three notes don´t make you sit up with a start you have the most unshockalble ears in early music! However, if you return to these after the rest of the disc they seem the obvious thing to have done, a tribute to the seductiveness of her interpretations of works to which I am glad to have been introduced ... Arranged for gamba, the nobility of Corelli's slow movements is even more pronounced than usual and Paul Simmonds' nimble fingers make light of the lavish decorations in Babell's transcription of Handel ... The Babells had, and the Trio Basiliensis have, excellent taste. This is much more than mere Tafelmusik.

Scheinbar war für den ab 1700 in London lebenden französischen Fagottisten Charles Babell nebst seiner Orchestertätigkeit und dem Komponieren das Sammeln und Bearbeiten von zeitgenössischen Werken eine zusätzliche Einnahmequelle. So entstand auch das in der Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, aufbewahrte Manuscript.
...Das Trio Basiliensis stellt auf interessanteste Weise mit ihrer neuesten CD einen Teil dieser Sammlung vor.
... Simmonds´ Spiel ist wirklich meisterhaft, erfrischend und sehr differenziert. Ich hätte ihm nur ein klangvolleres Instrument unter die fabelhaften Finger gewünscht. Auch die bearbeitete Violinsonate g-moll aus op. 5 von Arcangelo Corelli für Gambe und Continuo trägt zum guten Gelingen der CD bei. Das Trio Basiliensis hat sich einmal mehr als harmonisches und mutiges Ensemble gezeigt, und ich freue mich schon jetzt auf weitere mögliche Raritäten.
